After a successful career at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, culminating as a full professor holding the Pietz Professorship for entrepreneurship and economic development, Jennifer Karlin has transitioned to the University of Southern Maine (USM). She continues to study how colleges and universities as organizations and how adjustments in organizational infrastructure can create positive change. Her work is rooted economic development, organizational excellence, and holistic learner development. Economic development focus is in the areas of how universities can better position themselves to directly contribute to the nation’s economic security and how all students can be better prepared for their role in the economy. Within organizational excellence, she specializes in transformational processes, such as lean thinking, six sigma, and effective change management (both strategic and process). She particularly enjoys using organizational excellence as a lever to improve the learning experience for both learners and teachers.
